When Tom first notified me that I was chosen as the athlete of the month I was super surprised since I’ve never really considered myself much of an “athlete”. I grew up in Monterrey, Mexico and never really had the opportunity to be involved in organized sports. I moved to Texas at an early age, but again, other than the High School Drill team, I was never big into athletics or working out. My fitness background has always been limited to dancing, which I love to do, along with the occasional Globo gym Yoga or aerobics class.
I was introduced to crossfit over two years ago by my husband Ricardo, who has always been involved in sports and wanted to try something new. He showed me a website about crossfit and I said to him “wow, this look crazy hard but fun… I’ll give it a try.” I felt vey intimidated the first time I walked into a crossfit box as I had no idea what I was doing. To give you some perspective, I had never lifted a barbell in my life and had no clue as to how to do many of the movements. The first day, I was dragging tires, pushing a truck down the parking lot and carrying sand bags over my back. At some point, I remember thinking to myself, “what in the world am I doing here”. It was a tough workout, but at the end of the day I felt great about what I had accomplished and couldn’t wait for more.
I’m so glad that I didn’t give up after the first few tough months because my experience at Core has been nothing short of life changing. I can’t say enough about all the great coaches and classmates at Core that have helped me accomplish so much. Many things have come slow for me but it’s crazy to think of all the lifts and movements that I have learned and now feel very comfortable with. I have never felt this strong, healthy and confident about myself. Every day at Core is a great challenge… It’s very tough but it’s all worth it… even with all the bumps and bruises, the calluses on my hands and the scars on my shins. It’s all part of a fun culture that I have grown to love and appreciate. Nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment after a crazy WOD!
At this point there is no turning back as I see myself practicing crossfit for the rest of my life. I get the opportunity to meet interesting and fun people, all while getting fit and strong. Last but not least, I get to spend fun times with my loving husband, who, by the way looks better than ever thanks to Core CrossfitJ!

you are a badass chica!!! I always get jacked when I come to the gym and see that you are doing the WOD with me! No matter the movement or the difficulty of the WOD you always bring intensity and you never quit!!!! You inspire me and I think it's awesome that you and Ricardo bring it together!!! Congrats! Not to mention your from Texas so that makes you SUPER BadAss!!!

You are Awesome!!!! You always have a smile on you face and you seem to never sweat. Really!!! It's crazy to see how well you keep it together while I'm dropping buckets of sweat on the floor. Anyways, you are a constant positive and encouraging influence in the gym and outside and absolutely deserve this. Congratulations.
Hooray! I agree with Emily - You definitely deserve this! Every time I see you on the pull up bars now I think back to all those 5:30 am workouts. You would stay after almost every morning to work on them. I never saw you get upset or frustrated - you just put in the work knowing the results would come - and always left with a smile on your face. Congratulations!
