Athlete Of The Month

When Nathan came in for the first time I could tell he was really nervous and uncomfortable.  He made me nervous just talking to him.  We had a short conversation about his goals and what he wanted to get out of Core.  I remember him speaking really poorly of himself and lacking self confidence.  I knew if  he signed up he would find everything he needed from everyone here at Core.

Fast forward to today and Nathan is a totally different person.  He works extremely hard and pushing himself and is always cheering those around him.  I’m really happy and proud of you Nathan.  This is only the beginning.

Being physically out of shape is exhausting.  Not so much the physical aspect (even thought it is).  It’s the mental games, that I went through on a daily basis to avoid getting fit, that wore me down!  My mind was just as out of shape as my body and I desperately needed a quick fix.  Unfortunately a quick fix was all that I was capable of completing on my own.  I would argue with myself and eventually stroll into the gym for a pathetic quick “pump up”.  I wouldn’t make it through a 5 song set list and waddle back home defeated.  I knew that I needed something else, something different, something that kept me going day after day, something like….a support team.

Alas, I joined CoreCrossfit in June and immediately knew that I had found something special.  I had become so accustomed to making excuses that I was proud of myself for even walking in the door.  I had created a lot of reasons to not workout.  Up until June, I had hovered at being around 30 pounds over weight, 30 pounds! Did you know a gallon of water weighs approximately 8 pounds?  Think about it.  How would it be to walk 400m with a gallon of water in each hand and another strapped to your size 38 pants?  It quickly becomes exhausting and I desperately welcomed a new formula to shed it.
After I “passed” my initial test with Tom, something that he said stuck with me as I cried for the following week about how sore I was.  He simply said, “set small goals and track your progress” and know that  “you are only competing against yourself”, I was floored!  I had always looked at losing weight as a Marathon that I didn’t want to run.  I had never thought of breaking it down to a more manageable task- something I could physically and emotional digest.  I quickly found myself mentally lighter and sharper and knew that the physical aspect would quickly come around.  Three days a week of CrossFit was invigorating.  Core has the entire package for me, the atmosphere, the support and the damn website that I check like a crack addict to see what the WOD is.  (I usually pray that it does not involve rowing)

I still have a long way to go but in 3 months I have proudly got with the program, started eating better and have religiously keep CoreCrossfit in my weekly routine. My reward?  Losing 30 pounds (my double chin) and fitting into size 34 pants.  I have continued to set goals but now they are a little bigger.  I have already signed up for a 3 mile 10 obstacle challenge AZUrbanatholon in November and the 12 mile ToughMudder early next year.  I may die in these up coming challenges but my brain is rocket fueled these days and I will continue to push my self with the newly resurrected mental, physical and emotion strength that CoreCrossFit has brought out in me.

Thank you all for you incredible support!
